Alex and I are holidaying in Venice, California, home of The Doors.
So, with that in mind, today I am taking Alex on his own personal Doors tour and he doesn’t even really like The Doors…. no way!
Luckily for us, I love The Doors!
Alex and wake to this from our hotel room window…
Venice Beach according to Wikipedia:
Venice Beach, which receives millions of visitors a year, has been labeled as “a cultural hub known for its eccentricities” as well as a “global tourist destination.” It includes the promenade that runs parallel to the beach (“Ocean Front Walk” or just “the boardwalk”), Muscle Beach, the handball courts, the paddle tennis courts, Skate Dancing plaza, the numerous beach volleyball courts, the bike trail and the businesses on Ocean Front Walk.
12:00pm After a leisurely breakfast we make our way around Venice. We stop at various points of interest (for The Doors minded), like Jim Morrison’s mural and various locations where Jim Morrison and The Doors’ band members stood for photoshoots. In brief, this is some of the cool stuff we pass along the way:
Cruise Ocean Front Walk (where The Doors used to frequent).
Cool street art.
Arnold Swarzeneger mural.
1811 Speedway, near the corner of 18th Avenue for the Jim Morrison mural.
South Venice Boulevard – walk the canals of Venice.
Riviera Avenue to Abbot Kinney Boulevard for a shopping strip turning trendy – where they have valet parking outside the Kreation Organic café… is that really necessary?
Backtrack down Abbot Kinney Boulevard 14 Westminster (now called Morrison Apartments) – Jim Morrison used to sleep on roof here on occasions.
50 Brooks Avenue – Coca Cola sign where The Doors did a photo shoot.
30 Brooks Avenue – in front of garage where the Doors did another photo shoot.
Ocean Front Walk back to the beginning.
6:00pm As the sun sets on our Doors day, we look to head to the pub next door for some of The Doors music.
The Venice Bistro is a hotel located next door to the Caddilac Hotel and a venue where a Doors tribute band called Peace Frog are due to play tonight, as they do semi regularly.
Peace Frog play a 5 hour long gig where the lead singer, who is very Jim Morrisonesque and pretty awesome. While I mention (only in passing) that the drinks are a little on the pricey side and the USD$5 cover charge additional, it is a small price to pay for the experience of being on Venice Beach, watching a Jim Morrison lookalike fronting a Doors tribute band who plays nearly every Doors song over a 5 hour period.
This concludes Alex’s personal Doors tour and I think he seems pleased?
My knee hurts from dancing for 5 hours but somebody’s gotta do it.
Tomorrow Alex will get a rest from Venice, the Doors and the beach scene as we head to exclusive Beverley Hills and Hollywood.
